Summer Library Program Cheers

Here are some great library cheers, as created by the talented SCLS youth services librarians for the 2002 Summer Library Program, Join the Winner's Circle - READ! Please send your library cheer to Shawn Brommer .

The cheers are:
"This is the way we...."
An action song sung to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes."
To the marching chant of the Marines...they will echo you back until "sound off"
"The Read, Read, Read Chant" by Rob Reid"
Sung to tune of "Eensy, Weensy, Spider"
To the tune of "Head and Shoulders"
To the tune/rhythm of "Down by the station, early in the morning"
Take me out to the library

"This is the way we..."
To the tune of "The Mulberry Bush", actions to suit.

This is the way we swing the bat, swing the bat, swing the bat.
This is the way we swing the bat, all summer long.
  Shoot some hoops.
  Kick the ball.
  Peddle our bikes.
  Swim some laps.
  Turn the page.

This cheer is simple and easy to remember and designed for preschoolers.

An action song sung to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes."

Join the winner's circle, read.
READ! READ! (Cheer-raise hand in the air)
Join the winner's circle, read.
   LET'S READ!
We'll tell a story and read some books.
Join the winner's circle, read.
   LET'S READ!

Repeat and join hands with your neighbors to form a circle. Hmm, maybe a revolving circle. Ya, that's it. Walk in one direction the first time through, then change direction and walk in the opposite direction. All the time singing with great energy and enthusiasm, "Join the winner's circle...."

(Permission is granted to anyone brave enough to actually use this to change the cheer refrain to be all READ! READ! or all LET'S READ!)

Summer is a lot of fun,
Swim and bike and play and run.

When you get a little tired (say to rhyme with card).
Go and get your library card.

Find yourself a real cool book,
Crawl in to a cozy nook.

Fall in to adventure land,
Kids and books go hand in hand.

Sound off - on the run
Sound off - for summer fun
(all together in a rhythmic shout) BAR-A-BOO PUB-LIC LI-BRA-RY!! (Insert your library's name here)

"The Read, Read, Read Chant" by Rob Reid

(Chorus) Leader: "Read, read, read, let's read.
Group: Read, read, read, let's read.
Leader: Read, read, read, let's read.
Group: Read, read, read, let's read.

Leader: Read in the kitchen, read in the park, read in day, and read when it's dark.
Read in the tub, read at school, read in the 'frig 'cause it's real cool.
Read to a dog, read to a cow, read to a kitty cat and read to a sow.
Read to your Barbie and read to your teddy, read to your toys before you go to beddie.

(Chorus)

Leader: Read at the gym while shooting hoops, read at a restaurant while sipping soup.
Read at the circus, read at the zoo, the monkeys are reading and so should you.
Read a mystery, guess the clue, Read something scary and then go 'Boo!'
Read at the pool, read in a tree, read when you're alone or with your family.

(Chorus)

End with one final "READ!"

Oh the cool, cool readers,
come in the li-brar-ry,
Oh the cool, cool readers,
To see what they can see,
Take out a book,
And be all that you can be,
We're the cool, cool readers,
As everyone can see!

To the tune/rhythm of "Down by the station, early in the morning"

Down by the playing field, early in the morning
See the little soccer players, all in a row
See the happy referee, blowing on his whistle
Tweet, tweet, kick, kick, here we go!

Take me out to the library

Take me out to the library
Help me pick out some books
We'll get some joke books and mysteries
We can check out as much as we please
So let's go-go-go to the library
If it is closed it's a shame
Cause we love to read and get books
At the library!
