5. Discussion
a. Further discussion of collection development topic begun on 2/15.
i. Alex: How do libraries balance collecting popular items with niche items? How are gaps in collections (subjects/types of materials) filled?
1. As an example, Alex read email about manga in SCLS libraries.
a. Browsing for it in libraries (physically) difficult because most libraries have few titles or incomplete series.
b. Browsing for it digitally, records are unfindable.
ii. Rose: Is it a collection development issue or a cataloging (ILS) issue?
iii. Jean: This gets into the realm of ILS/SCIDS. Madison is resource library for the system. Conversations would need to include someone from Madison.
iv. Jean: Collection development, libraries independently purchase their own materials based on what the community wants.
v. Shawn: Would it be helpful to play/test the catalog to see how easy it is to find niche materials. Maybe someone could create a Tech Bits with “best ways of finding materials”?
vi. Rose: Discovery Interface Subcommittee has done some search tips type stuff for different types of materials. Suggest manga to them?
vii. Alex: Look for interest gaps then create and share lists (across libraries) to refer to in growing collections.
viii. Leah-Dane County Beyond the Page grants could be an example. Participating libraries had to purchase based on a specific topic. Other libraries knew which library was collecting what (there was a list). If someone wanted materials on a specific topic, they knew what library to go to. Each library became experts on materials about their assigned topic.
ix. Rose: Should this be a workgroup project?
x. WiLS Ideas to Action Grants applications open? Could be used to purchase a specialized collection.
xi. Mark: When it comes to collection development at individual libraries, are there focused plans for the year? Can those plans be shared with other libraries?
xii. Shawn shared a managinglibraries.com webinar link in chat.
xiii. Mehta: The library makes some purchases based on what has been weeded (and then needs to be filled-in). Tries to purchase more computer books each year, since that type of information is updated frequently.
xiv. Alex: How does resource library work, what are the funds?
1. Jean: There is a contract and SCIDs system funds are determined from that. Jean will share link from SCLS page with details.
xv. Jean: WPLC has statewide selectors. Maybe there could be a workgroup or user group to focus on collection development/selectors.
xvi. Jean: Maybe quarterly meetings about collection development with sharing what plans/focuses are for libraries’ collections.
xvii. Tim messaged Kayla about authority control. There are metadata fields for genre. They are very specific. It depends on the cataloger if those fields are used or not. Could focusing on cataloging data and metadata entry make materials more accessible?
b. Library Visit questions preview.
i. Questions will be asked by SCLS staff at 2022 SCLS library visits
ii. Visits will be conducted by the end of October.
iii. Sharing reports:
1. Reports are shared with the SCLS Board.
2. Laura suggested that it might be beneficial for libraries to see other libraries’ answer to #3. Rose: A page with links to the reports may be created to make accessing them easier.
iv. No suggestions for edits or additions were made to the draft questions.
v. Questions:
1. How are you and your staff doing?
2. What are the next projects (big or small) on your library’s to-do list?
3. Are there service changes or new services from the last two years that you plan on continuing?
4. How can SCLS help?
5. Is there anything else you’d like to share or discuss?
c. LIS Members visiting libraries.
i. Leah: Suggested this be a standing item on the agenda. It serves as a reminder to do it.
6. Items from clusters (for Committees only): None
7. Plan for next meeting: June 14, 2022 via BlueJeans
a. Further discussion of collection development topic discussed 2/15 and 4/12.
i. How are gaps in collections (subjects/types of materials) filled?
1. Could there be lists of gaps created and shared across libraries that could inform collection development?
2. Could there be system-wide meetings about collection development with libraries sharing what plans/focuses are for collection development.
ii. Is providing/finding niche items a collection development issue or a cataloging (ILS) issue?
1. ILS issue-may need to include Madison (resource library)
2. Maybe someone could create a Tech Bits with “best ways of finding materials”?
3. Discovery Interface Subcommittee has done some search tips type stuff for different types of materials. Suggest manga to them?
4. Could focusing on cataloging quality, data, and metadata entry make materials more accessible?
iii. Should a workgroup or user group be started?
b. LIS committee member library visits.
Adjournment: Alex LeClair moved to adjourn, Mehta Hess seconded. Motion passed. Adjourned at 9:46 a.m.
