Director’s Report

May 2023

Meetings and Visits

I conducted an annual visit with Jennifer Way of the Oregon Public Library. She is in a huge building project with completion dates that match SCLS dates.

I attended the June ILS, Technology and Delivery Committee meetings.  They were held virtually.  In addition, I attended the Administrative Council meeting.

Building Update

The move to Pankratz was estimated to take 5 days.  It was completed in 2.5 days.  The Move Team’s pre-move work paid off with huge dividends.  All staff helped to move and unpack the new site.  The cubicles were installed before the move for staff to use immediately.  The 7 office pods are being worked on with a plan to complete them in July if the door frames arrive in time.  The staff furniture is being stored in the new break room while the offices are being built.

We were planning on using the existing landlines at Pankratz for the Talking Tech Service which phones library customers of holds and overdues, but the lines were not listed on the underground records used by the “Before You Dig” company and were pulled out by the excavator.  AT&T is working to expedite a solution before June 30 when the phone service is relocated to Pankratz from Biltmore.

The process of moving the data center will begin the afternoon of June 28 and be finished July 1.

SCLS network services will not be available between the afternoon of Wednesday, June 28 and Saturday,

July 1, 2023, while SCLS moves network services to its new building. This means that libraries that use

SCLS as its Internet Services Provider will be without access to the internet. In addition, other SCLS

services will not be available due to the cutover. Members have been given a link for a list of service availability.  Bibliovation, LINKcat and some databases will be available remotely, or with alternate internet access in libraries. Customers will still have access to LINKCat and electronic services from their homes since both are hosted in the cloud.

Staff meets with the construction supervisors every Tuesday morning to review work that has been done and work that needs to be done.  The foundation has been poured for the new building. The steel for the Delivery section of the new facility is scheduled for erection on June 22 and completion on June 28.

Photos of the on-going work can be found on the SCLS website under “About SCLS” and then clicking “New Building”. Updates are also posted to the SCLS Facebook page.

The Administration staff and several consultants are in the new building daily. Hard hats are required. The construction workers are working hard and friendly to the staff on site.
