VoIP on the SCLS Network

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) devices and voice traffic are prohibited on the SCLS network. This includes the “SCLS as ISP” service.

There are two reasons for this: a current lack of infrastructure and the prioritization of traffic.

  1. Lack of infrastructure
    • SCLS currently does not have the design nor configuration in place to support VoIP’s required level of performance.
    • VoIP devices often offer the ability to “daisy-chain” an existing ethernet connection (Ex. Connecting a PC to a VoIP phone and then connect the VoIP phone to the network). This requires a special configuration to separate data and voice traffic. We do not support this extra configuration. This daisy-chain method can also increase complexity for both support and library staff personnel.
  2. Prioritization of traffic
    • There is an ethical dilemma when a system chooses to prioritize one site’s traffic over another’s. This would be required to ensure a minimum quality of service for voice traffic.
